Toile has only grown in popularity since its first began being produced for the masses in 1760. In fact it was first manufactured in a village outside of Paris known as Jouy-en-Josas, which is why the original name for the material was Toile de Jouy before being shortened to toile. From a factory in this village - a location chosen for its access to the running water that was necessary for dyeing - came the first mass produced toile fabric. These high-quality, 18th century fabrics established toile as a luxury fabric; a fabric that maintains a strong following today. Toile has traditionally been seen as a formal fabric but the addition of unique patterns and colors has introduced toile to a whole new audience that appreciates how it can be both classic and contemporary. Its versatility is surely its strong point; it is equally stunning as drapery or chair upholstery and lends itself to variety of applications.
