Pintucks are deceptively simple, and they are a great way to make a plain piece of fabric into something detailed and fancy. Make the pintucks before you cut out your pattern pieces. The method I’ll show you is how to make them using a specialized pintuck presser foot. You can also make them by creating and stitching folds into the fabric, which has a different look.

As I did this technique tutorial, I realized I wanted to make something with the pretty pintuck pieces, so I stitched them into simple lavender drawer sachets. (more…)

This cute handbag has a strap that’s actually just two separate straps tied together at the top. It’s also fully reversible. No matter which way you have it, it will have a pocket inside and a pocket outside. The tab snap works from either direction. It’s an easy bag to make, so give it a try! (more…)

Boxy chair cushion

Doesn’t your tushy deserve a little cushy? Chair cushions can get rather pricey when you multiply them times all the chairs at your table. Well, lucky you. You can sew, and it’s not hard to make your own. All you need is fabric and foam! I’ll show you how to make one style that you can customize to your own chairs. (more…)
Here’s a straight-forward, lined tote bag that’s perfect for anything you need to haul around. It’s fully lined and has divider pockets inside for your phone, MP3 player, pens, etc., plus a flap pocket and a zippered pocket on the outside — a perfect place to keep your keys handy.

Would you like to win this bag? And how about a book to carry in it? Children’s book author Caroline Rose is giving away a copy of Denise Jaden’s book “Losing Faith” on her blog this week, and if you are the winner, you get both the book and this bag! Hop on over to Caroline’s blog, Caroline By Line, for more information. Meanwhile, if you’d like to make a bag like this, stick around for instructions.

Putting a zipper pocket into a bag seems tricky, but it’s actually quite simple. I originally learned how to do this from U-Handbag, but I am re-creating the tutorial here for you. (more…)

Embroidered wall hanging

What do you think of when you see the word “crewel”? Old-lady activity? Ugly floral needlework? I know. But needlework in general has made a modern resurgence. First, it was regular embroidery. Web sites like Sublime Stitching made embroidery seem hip and cool. Modern patterns take the boring out of needlework.
Crewel is no different, thanks to the book “The New Crewel” and its related Web site
Wool and Hoop.

If you don’t know how to embroider, never fear! It’s really easy to learn. I learned with a few simple instructions and was on my way in no time. You can, too! This is not a tutorial on embroidery stitching, but rather an idea for what you can do with it.

This week, I’m doing two crewel embroidery posts. Please see the one on making a greeting card here. (more…)

Embroidered wristlet

I must admit, I’m usually one for bigger bags. I just can’t seem to pare down my load enough for a wristlet. All the same, they still appeal to me. And sometimes you really do just need something small. I loved the simplicity of this wristlet, and the opportunity to do some embroidery. (more…)

Shower curtain, wall hangings and fancy towels

My guest bath used to be an awful chocolate ice cream color. I’ve hated it for the last few years, but not enough to bother painting it. I finally had it painted a cheerful yellow, and I knew it was time for a whole new look. I felt inspired by the black and white accessories, and set out on a mission to create a whole new bathroom with very little money.

This post will cover three tutorials:
1. how to make a dramatic, ruffled shower curtain
2. how to make fabric wall hangings on the cheap
3. how to fancy up your plain towels (more…)

I am preparing a nursery for my baby, and it’s not done yet. I’ll be sharing photos with you soon. I’ve made bedding and accessories from some adorable fabrics, but I probably won’t be ready to share the whole shebang with you until later in June.
For now, I wanted to make a little window valance with some of the fabric. The room feels really bare right now, and I loved the oomph this project gave to that wall. I whipped up a very simple valance; it’s not lined and it’s quick and easy. For me, the back side of the curtain didn’t matter. It’s a second-story window and it has blinds, too. If someone can actually take note of the fact that it’s not lined, they are probably a peeping Tom with binoculars. And I really don’t care what peeping Toms think of my window valances, anyway. I’m pregnant, and I recently bought a fancy-pants designer diaper bag that’s compact and looks like a purse. But, really, who am I trying to kid? I could maybe fit the contents of my purse in there, but with baby stuff, too? No way. I mean, every day when I walk into work I have a tote bag, a purse and a lunch cooler that looks like a purse (and they are all in different patterns, so I look like some sort of mismatched hobo). Add a baby’s needs to this, and I had to get serious and accept the fact that I’m going to need something bigger. Much bigger.
