Last minute stocking stuffers – purse tissue holders

Christmas is just days away. If you’re looking for an easy stocking stuffer, this is a quick and fun project. They are a pretty way to carry tissues in your purse, and also a great scrap-buster.

The pattern

For the pouches that are all one fabric, you’ll need two pieces that measure 6-3/4″x7-1/2″.

For the multi-fabric pouches, you’ll need a bottom piece that measures 6-3/4″x7-1/2″, two top pieces that measure 2-1/2″x7-1/2″ and one top piece (center) that measures 2-1/4″x7-1/2″.

You’ll see that on two of my pouches, the center opening overlaps itself. I decided I preferred that to the one that didn’t overlap (the colorful one). These measurements allow for the overlap. If you prefer it not to overlap, just subtract 1/2″ from the long side. It’s really just a matter of personal preference.

1/4 inch seam allowances.

The process

If you are using two fabrics, sew them together as such and press open the seams.
The houndstooth will make up my lining, the other piece my outer pouch.
Sew them right-sides together, leaving a few inches open on one long side for turning.
I like to back-stitch at either side of the corners for extra strength. Also, trim your corners before turning.
Turn your pouch right-side out and use something to gently press the corners out. Turn the seam allowance in where the hole is.
Press it flat and crisp, then top-stitch along the short ends.
Bring your short ends together and overlap slightly. Pin in place.
Sew on either side to secure.
Now we will box the corners. This just looks a lot nicer to me. You can skip this part if you want and your pouch will still look nice and work fine.

To box the corners, pinch each corner the opposite way from how it is currently lying. Your seam allowance will be on top.

Sew across the corner a small distance from the corner, as shown.
It will look like this when all four corners are done. Remember, the lining is still on the outside.

Trim off the corners.

Turn it right-side out.
Steam it a little, if you are so inclined.
Take a purse-pack of tissues out of their original plastic case and insert.
