How ’bout that? A hat!

Sunday, June 13th, 2010
From time to time, I like to write about a sewing project that you might not think of when you think of home decorator fabrics. So how about a hat? I bet that no matter what kind of sewing you do, you probably haven’t considered a hat.

Poor hats. Nobody really wears them anymore. Maybe a knitted winter cap or a baseball hat, but as regular accessories, they’ve sort of fallen out of favor. I, for one, always feel a little too obvious in a hat. A little uncomfortable. And I’m trying to change that.

One day, I came across etsy.com seller McHats and thought, “What a wonderful sewing project! Who knew I could just whip up a hat?” And so I did. (more…)

Diaper bag with a divider

Sunday, May 16th, 2010
I’m pregnant, and I recently bought a fancy-pants designer diaper bag that’s compact and looks like a purse. But, really, who am I trying to kid? I could maybe fit the contents of my purse in there, but with baby stuff, too? No way. I mean, every day when I walk into work I have a tote bag, a purse and a lunch cooler that looks like a purse (and they are all in different patterns, so I look like some sort of mismatched hobo). Add a baby’s needs to this, and I had to get serious and accept the fact that I’m going to need something bigger. Much bigger.

I set off on a quest to make the most useful diaper bag I could. I had made some for friends before, but I really wanted a center divider.

You can carry your stuff and baby’s stuff, all in one bag. It’s a biggun, measuring about 19″ long, 12″ tall and 6″ wide. (more…)

Reversible scalloped apron tutorial

Sunday, January 31st, 2010
Scalloped reversible apron Fancy, flirty aprons are all the rage, and they sell for good money at a lot of stores. But if you can sew, you can make your own, and I’ll show you how. Seem a little too frilly? Use it any old time, but especially when you have guests. People get a kick out of them! And don’t be afraid to use it; it’s just fabric, and you can wash it.

This pattern is for a fully reversible, gathered, scalloped apron with pockets. Have fun with the fabrics and mix them up to make it more interesting. This apron uses the same fabrics on both sides, but in opposite placement.

Jacket lining and interlining

Jacket interlining

Jacket interlining

Last week, I did a post on a funky green jacket. This week, we’re going to look at the inside of the jacket. What you see from the inside is the lining. What you don’t see is the interlining, or the batting I added for extra warmth. The jacket pattern (McCalls 5060) included lining but not interlining, and so I wanted to discuss how to add that, and also what the difference is between interlining and lining. It’s very easy! This week, I also have a post on making your own covered buttons, related to this jacket.

McCall's 5060

McCall's 5060

When I first saw this fabric, I immediately thought that I would like to make a jacket from it. I’m not sure where the idea came from, and I know it’s sort of a bold fabric for a long jacket, but I really liked the idea. I’m really pleased with the results, even if my husband did point out that it, well, “really stands out.” With men, you’re just not really sure what that means.

I think it will make a perfect spring jacket, but I don’t mind wearing it even now. It was a time-consuming project, that’s for sure, but a great opportunity to improve my skills. You really feel like you have accomplished something when you make a lined jacket.

I decided to interline this jacket with cotton batting to make it a little warmer, and I plan to post a little more on interlining next week. I also made my own covered buttons, which I will also show you in an upcoming post.
