A wee boy’s room

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010
I’m ready to share my son’s nursery with you! I decided to base the room around a selection of Warehouse Fabrics Inc. materials. The first thing I did was put together a few concepts that I liked and shared them with my husband. I wanted him to feel included, you know? Only, silly me, I forgot that he’s sort of the most stubborn man in the world. Or universe, maybe. So right away he chooses the one that was last on my list. And from there, there was no winning for me. (more…)

Linen Solid Oats - LINOAT

Sometimes simpler is better. It’s easy to be wooed by all the beautiful colors and patterns of fabrics, not to mention texture. But sometimes it’s the most basic fabrics that make the most useful and beautiful things. And that’s why I love the Linen Solid Oats fabric. From clothing to embroidery (more on that in a few weeks) to handbags, this is a gorgeous fabric that lets the final object really shine for what it is.

So it’s no wonder that Southern Lady magazine has featured it in its July/August issue, hitting newsstands the first of July.

These gorgeous, full-bodied curtains feature the Linen Solid Oats and lots of ruffles.

Bathroom makeover on the cheap

Shower curtain, wall hangings and fancy towels

My guest bath used to be an awful chocolate ice cream color. I’ve hated it for the last few years, but not enough to bother painting it. I finally had it painted a cheerful yellow, and I knew it was time for a whole new look. I felt inspired by the black and white accessories, and set out on a mission to create a whole new bathroom with very little money.

This post will cover three tutorials:
1. how to make a dramatic, ruffled shower curtain
2. how to make fabric wall hangings on the cheap
3. how to fancy up your plain towels (more…)

Quick and easy pleated window valance

Sunday, May 30th, 2010
I am preparing a nursery for my baby, and it’s not done yet. I’ll be sharing photos with you soon. I’ve made bedding and accessories from some adorable fabrics, but I probably won’t be ready to share the whole shebang with you until later in June.
For now, I wanted to make a little window valance with some of the fabric. The room feels really bare right now, and I loved the oomph this project gave to that wall. I whipped up a very simple valance; it’s not lined and it’s quick and easy. For me, the back side of the curtain didn’t matter. It’s a second-story window and it has blinds, too. If someone can actually take note of the fact that it’s not lined, they are probably a peeping Tom with binoculars. And I really don’t care what peeping Toms think of my window valances, anyway. Ottoman slipcover

Monday, May 24th, 2010
I had been wanting to make a slipcover for our ottoman for a while. It’s still a nice ottoman, but it’s leather and we want to keep it protected. It didn’t take long for that one piece of the leather set to start showing more wear and tear than the others. One time, I made a little “shower cap” type of cover for it, and it’s ugly as sin. So when I came across this ottoman slipcover tutorial from Sew4Home, I fell in love.

The nice thing about the tutorial is that it shows you how to make it to your own measurements, since chances are, we all have different sized ottomans. Mine is more rounded, which I didn’t consider ideal for this project, but I still think it worked out well.

A great thing about slipcovers is that you can pick up a mismatched piece of furniture just about anywhere (yard sale, thrift store, new) and make it work with your decor. In the entries to our recent gift certificate giveaway, some of you said you’d like to learn how to make slipcovers. This is not a couch or a chair, but it’s one piece of your living room furniture to get you started! (more…)

Make a pillow using a pillowform

Saturday, May 8th, 2010
Pillow forms are nice for several reasons. For one, you can more easily clean the visible part of the pillow if something soils it. Pillow forms also have a nice shape that is hard to get from polyester stuffing. Also, no slip stitching the edge closed! Just use a zipper. (more…)

Reversible tissue box cover

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

It's allergy season, right?

Maybe we just have too many cats, but in my house, there is a box of tissue parked in every room. Sometimes, multiple boxes. Here’s a cute way to make them more of an accessory to a room than an eyesore. Best of all, it takes just minutes to finish. Oh, wait. No … best of all is that it’s reversible, so it’s like two, two, two covers in one! (more…)

Easiest baby quilt – part 2

Cute and soft, all at once

In last week’s post, we made the quilt sandwich for this baby quilt and quilted it using free-motion quilting. Then we applied the backing afterward and basted it all together. In this week’s tutorial, we will create bias binding and apply it. Any quilt takes time, and this one is no exception, but if you aren’t familiar with cutting and piecing, it’s definitely nice and easy. And much faster!

Part 1 can be found here. (more…)

Tufted floor pillow

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Ahhhh.

Sitting on the floor seems to run in my husband’s family. I prefer a couch, myself. But for those who lounge on the floor, how about getting comfy on a big, soft, tufted floor pillow?
This pillow is HUGE, and the sewing part is really quick and easy. The tufting and covered buttons take the bulk of your time, but you’ll be surprised what a great pillow you get for little effort. (more…)
