Bordered place mats
Last week, I showed you how to make mitered-corner napkins. This week, we’ll make coordinating place mats to go with them. My first attempt to make place mats came right when I taught myself to sew. I gave them to my grandmother. Looking back, boy were they awful! Funny, I’ve never seen them around her house. I guess they must have been bad if your grandma won’t pretend to like them. These place mats are super-easy to make, and they will hold up well in the wash. |

I started with 1.5 yards of Circus sailor (you’ll want a bit extra because it’s a directional print), .5 yard Classic sailor and 1 yards Lancaster sailor. |
The pattern
One of my favorite sites for ideas is Sew4Home.com. That’s where I spied these place mats. You can find the tutorial here Instead of doing a one-fabric backing, I chose to do the backs in the same manner in which I did the fronts. I did four place mats with the same fronts, and for the backs I did two different combinations. This way, one could play with the way the table is set.
PLEASE NOTE: I would advise you to pre-wash your fabric. I am so often lazy about that, and I have paid for it many times! This time, I took no chances. Place mats must be washed often, so you want any shrinkage to occur beforehand. |
