Bordered place mats

Mix and match!
Last week, I showed you how to make mitered-corner napkins. This week, we’ll make coordinating place mats to go with them.

My first attempt to make place mats came right when I taught myself to sew. I gave them to my grandmother. Looking back, boy were they awful! Funny, I’ve never seen them around her house. I guess they must have been bad if your grandma won’t pretend to like them.

These place mats are super-easy to make, and they will hold up well in the wash.

Supplies

(Click fabrics for direct links for purchase at Warehouse Fabrics Inc.)

Circus sailor (CISSAR)

Classic sailor (CLCSAR)

Lancaster sailor (LARSAR)
I started with 1.5 yards of Circus sailor (you’ll want a bit extra because it’s a directional print), .5 yard Classic sailor and 1 yards Lancaster sailor.

The pattern

One of my favorite sites for ideas is Sew4Home.com. That’s where I spied these place mats. You can find the tutorial here Instead of doing a one-fabric backing, I chose to do the backs in the same manner in which I did the fronts. I did four place mats with the same fronts, and for the backs I did two different combinations. This way, one could play with the way the table is set.

PLEASE NOTE: I would advise you to pre-wash your fabric. I am so often lazy about that, and I have paid for it many times! This time, I took no chances. Place mats must be washed often, so you want any shrinkage to occur beforehand.
