Recently, we talked about bound seams. Bound seams are a way to finish the inside of a sewn object so that it looks nice. They are especially nice on unlined jackets. If you want to finish the seams on a sheer garment, try a French seam.

A few weeks ago, I demonstrated a one-step bound seam. It’s basically a quick and easy way to accomplish what looks very much the same as this two-step bound seam. The difference is in the number of times you have to stitch the seam. In the one-step, we simply sandwiched the seam allowance inside the double-fold bias tape and stitched once, catching the front and back of the bias tape at the same time. It’s quick and easy, but can be trickier on curved seams or corners.

This version takes two passes to complete but will be easier to do on curves and corners. Please review the link above for the one-step method if you’d like to see the difference. Read the rest of this entry »

February’s fabric special is Grand Kayman, a chenille upholstery fabric that normally costs $8.98 a yard. But for the month of February only it is marked down to just $4.98 a yard! The price will change to the discounted price on Feb. 1, but we like to give you a little time to get excited.

This beautiful neutral will accent and complement your home decor without being showy or overbearing.

We encourage you to order samples early, because this deal is for one month only.

When you’re a home sewer without a studio, it can be hard to manage long lengths of fabric. Say you’re making curtains and need to cut and match panels. Now you have to find a big area to lay out your fabric on the floor. You have to avoid raisins and juice spills (um, everyone deals with this, right? RIGHT?!). You have to keep pushing the cat off. You have to crawl around until your neck hurts. What does all that spell? M-I-S-T-A-K-E-S.

Well, how about if we do the cutting and print-matching for you? Fabulous, right? We now offer custom cutting!

A few things to know:

  • We will cut fabrics up to 72″ wide and 120″ long into panels for your project and match up the fabric repeats, if so desired.
  • Orders must be placed online so that all the requirements are in writing and there is no confusion.
  • $10-$23 per panel, depending on length.
  • Matching of repeats is included in that fee, provided you purchase enough fabric to allow that.
  • We can do all of your panels or just one, which you can then use as a guide from which you can cut your others.
  • No returns.

Let us help with all of your “big” projects like draperies and tablecloths. Cutting and measuring are the chore you work through to get to the fun part — sewing, right? Kind of like eating the pizza just to get to the crust. Or is that just me? I like the sewing part of the project and the crust part of the pizza.

Need more information? Lots and lots of details can be found on our “custom panel cutting” page.

Everyone loves our cotton duck Premier Prints! They are sturdy, versatile fabrics.

The fact that we’ve reduced the price from $7.79 a yard to $7.47 a yard is a great reason to try some. Need another reason? How about a few dozen more:

I’ve used them for bags (1 & 2 & 3), aprons, portable high chair, booster, car organizers (1 & 2), jacket, mixer covers, ironing board covers, kids’ chair pillows, laptop tote, funky Christmas stockings, napkins/place mat, (1 & 2) knitting needle rolls, oven mitts (1 & 2), toys, an entire nursery, door stops, storage baskets, eyeglass cases, tissue box cover, dog bed, sewing machine cover, shower curtain, draft dodgers, appliqued pillow, wall organizer, basket liner, raggedy wreath, tissue holders, list-taker, yoga mat bag, newsboy cap, knitting bags, gadget case, wine bottle gift bag.

They are great for mixing and matching since many of the prints coordinate with others in the line, and those are listed to help you with your shopping.

Less than $7.50 a yard for all those possibilities. Imagine that!

You know what I think is so unbelievably, incredibly cute? Little kids sitting in little chairs. My son usually won’t sit still for any length of time, so we’ve held off from buying one of those mini-armchairs.
This little rocker used to be mine. Heck, it may have even been my mom’s. I have another little wooden chair that was hers. I decided to make cute little “boy cushions” in this cowboy fabric. Now I can’t decide what’s cuter: the rocker with my boy or the rocker without my boy. Read the rest of this entry »

Car visor organizer

I will urge you not to multitask while driving, but I guess we all do it sometimes. Some more than others **cough-cough-my-husband**. Keep things handy and keep your car neat with a visor organizer. This is a quick-and-easy project that I found on Vanilla Joy. You can whip it up in no time. I have an explanation below on bias-tape mitered corners if you need some help. Bound seam Bound seams are a beautiful way to finish the inside of an unlined garment. They differ a little bit from Hong Kong seams in that the backside of the bias binding is folded on a bound seam and left raw on a Hong Kong seam (to reduce bulk). A bound seam may use purchased bias tape while you might prefer to make your own bias tape for a Hong Kong seam since you will not have that extra fold.

In this case, I did a one-step bound seam. I call it the “easy” method, though it’s not uncommon and is in some of my sewing books. Another method is a two-step method. I’ll cover that and the Hong Kong method in separate posts. Read the rest of this entry »
