Cutlery place mat

You know what I hate? Microwaved food. And plastic utensils. And using facial tissues for napkins because I forgot to bring one. And most of all, dirty tables. But such is life when you work, right? I mean, most of us do, and there really isn’t a way to avoid eating at least one meal away from home on work days.

I came across this idea for a place mat and utensil holder all in one and thought it was genius! It also holds cloth napkins and provides a surface to eat off of. I’d love to make several more of these.

These would be great for picnics, too, or as gifts.

Linen Solid Oats - LINOAT

Sometimes simpler is better. It’s easy to be wooed by all the beautiful colors and patterns of fabrics, not to mention texture. But sometimes it’s the most basic fabrics that make the most useful and beautiful things. And that’s why I love the Linen Solid Oats fabric. From clothing to embroidery (more on that in a few weeks) to handbags, this is a gorgeous fabric that lets the final object really shine for what it is.

So it’s no wonder that Southern Lady magazine has featured it in its July/August issue, hitting newsstands the first of July.

These gorgeous, full-bodied curtains feature the Linen Solid Oats and lots of ruffles.

The winner of the June fabric shopping spree is Jayne. She posted comment 123. Please note that I used my dashboard comments page to count the posts and find the winner, since it puts them in actual order of time submitted and the posts as visible on the blog are not.

Jayne has been emailed and has 48 hours to claim her prize. Jayne, you can also contact me through the contact page on the right. If the prize isn’t claimed, I’ll randomly generate another number.

Jayne likes the Bonnie Gold fabric and would possibly make curtains from it. Of course, she can spend her prize on anything she’d like at the store!

Thanks, everyone, for participating. Please check back for July’s giveaway and fun project ideas in between! This weekend, we’ll get patriotic.

***EDITED 6/17/10*** prize has been claimed!

From time to time, I like to write about a sewing project that you might not think of when you think of home decorator fabrics. So how about a hat? I bet that no matter what kind of sewing you do, you probably haven’t considered a hat.

Poor hats. Nobody really wears them anymore. Maybe a knitted winter cap or a baseball hat, but as regular accessories, they’ve sort of fallen out of favor. I, for one, always feel a little too obvious in a hat. A little uncomfortable. And I’m trying to change that.

One day, I came across etsy.com seller McHats and thought, “What a wonderful sewing project! Who knew I could just whip up a hat?” And so I did. Read the rest of this entry »

Shower curtain, wall hangings and fancy towels

My guest bath used to be an awful chocolate ice cream color. I’ve hated it for the last few years, but not enough to bother painting it. I finally had it painted a cheerful yellow, and I knew it was time for a whole new look. I felt inspired by the black and white accessories, and set out on a mission to create a whole new bathroom with very little money.

This post will cover three tutorials:
1. how to make a dramatic, ruffled shower curtain
2. how to make fabric wall hangings on the cheap
3. how to fancy up your plain towels Read the rest of this entry »

Guess what we have? Birdhouse kits! No sewing machine required. These snap kit bluebird houses are made by a local mill. A Warehouse Fabrics Inc. employee donated some to her daughter’s class, and the kids had a blast putting them together. Read the rest of this entry »
